Team and Solo Driving

Making the Right Choice for Your Career

The life of a truck driver is full of big decisions and long lasting consequences. In no other industry are decisions as “make or break” as in the world of heavy-haul trucking. Drivers face a variety of big decisions: equipment, carrier, and what type of freight they will haul. Once all these important decisions are made, drivers have one last choice they must make: will they be more or less successful running as a team?

Team and solo driving afford drivers vastly different lifestyles. The solo driver endures long hours, lots of stress, and a lot of hard work. Team drivers share the same difficulties, but must additionally be wary of another person’s needs, personality, and most importantly, their work ethic. Purchasing a truck is a significant investment that if you’re not careful, can eat up your entire profit. But by being an owner operator, your truck is going to be your livelihood so getting a good truck is going to be important. The next decision will be deciding whether to purchase a new or used truck. Purchasing a used truck provides many advantages, the most obvious being that the cost could be substantially lower. Another advantage is that more owner operators have been purchasing used trucks compared to buying a new one, especially for a first-time buyer. With newer trucks, it is commonly known that after you drive off the lot, it automatically depreciates in value around 20%-40%.

However, if you are not careful, purchasing a used truck can mean that you are buying more risk than opportunity. One of the major disadvantages of purchasing a used truck is that used vehicles are most likely [...]

The Electronic Log Device (ELD) mandate is less than 3 months away! If you are unfamiliar with the upcoming mandate, the ELD rule is intended to help create a safer work environment for drivers, and in turn, make it easier, faster to accurately track, manage, and share records of duty status (RODS) data. An ELD synchronizes with a vehicle engine to automatically record driving time, for easier, more accurate hours of service (HOS) recording. The mandate was first published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in December 2015, this is Phase One. In Phase Two, officially going into effect on December 18th, 2017, carriers and drivers can use AOBRDS that are installed prior to December 18th, 2017 or self-certified and have registered ELDs with FMCSA. Finally, Phase Three is after December 16th, 2019, where all drivers and carriers are subject to the rule must use self-certified ELDs that are registered with FMCSA.

Upgrading your fleet is a major investment, but it can be necessary depending upon the state and age of your existing equipment. You may find that replacing equipment with financing and leasing programs is a better investment than paying for numerous repairs to an older vehicle. It will also point out the benefits of updating your fleet with high-quality vehicles, including access to warranties, leasing options, low mileage, and low monthly payments.

Recently, Quality Companies collaborated with Thorn Valley Safety in a webinar to explain “How Safe Driving and the Electronic Log Device Mandate Will Impact Your Insurance.”

As a driver, a truck and/or trailer can be an extremely dangerous weapon while out on the road. It can not only affect the life of the driver but also others who are out on the road. It is important that the company you are driving for has an appropriate and effective safety department in place that is well trained in case an accident happens so the company is properly prepared to handle it. With the new ELD Mandate as well as companies continuing to improve their safety departments, practicing safe driving is getting easier.
